somali awdal empire conquer Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and Ifat and so. ogaden region in ethiopia was in fact for the somalis but britain gave it to them because of the anglo-ethio treaty (the british asked the ethios to help them contain the somali dervish leader so they can conolise somalia but failed but the british still let them keep the region) . But anyway somalis in somaliland (a county in north somalia that wants to become independent due to the genocide in the 80's) were extracting frankincence since ancient times.

The Romans weren't the first nor the last to try to invade the peninsula but it seems to be one of the most difficult places on Earth to colonize. Saladin and the Ottomans did try, managed to conquer but finally had to withdraw. So did the Ethipians in the 5th century AD. The Portuguese failed to conquer it alltogether, after the English left, the local rulers were pushed aside by the Saud family. In my opinion IF the Romans had taken over the Arabic penninsula, the only long term effect would have been that the Kuran would have been written in Latin.

Best

Great blog!
